Edinburgh Fringe: Top of the Pop-Ups

We round up the best pop-up bars, cafes and food and drink options at this year's Edinburgh Fringe

Boxsmall Market
Princes Mall
The roof of Princes Mall has been colonised by the series of wooden huts that make up the Boxsmall market, with some of the city's best street food vendors taking up residence for the month. Dodge the kids playing crazy golf, and check out Jones & Son's burgers, the fried shrimp sandwiches at Shrimpwreck and the Latin American arepas stuffed with all manner of pulled meats at Orinoco.

Holy Garage
George Sq Lane
For eleven months of the year, it's a lane of lock-ups and an electricity substation. But this is August, so the unassuming lane between the Meadows and George Square has been transformed into a half-inside, half-outside bar-slash-cafe. Coffee from Artisan Roast, beer from Barney's, meticulously-prepared absinthe and a horsebox converted into a gin bar – it's the kind of place we wish we had all year round.

Brew Lab Victoria Street
First it was Filament, then Machina Espresso, and now Brew Lab follow the grand tradition of running a pop-up coffee shop in the Victoria Street site between Espionage and the Liquid Rooms. Expect tasty coffees in an airy and surprisingly grand setting; coffee lovers should also look out for the Edinburgh Coffee Fringe, a series of tasting and events taking place in the city's cafes from 8-24 August.

WEST at George Street
The Glasgow-based, German-inspired brewers have popped up in the heart of George Street with a host of beers and a bar that looks a bit like it's fallen off a hillside in the 1700s. All black, thatched roof – trust us when we say you won't miss it. If you're looking for some grub nearby, Japanese street food aces Harajuku Kitchen have popped up with their gyozas outside the Edinburgh Digital Entertainment Festival at the Assembly Rooms down the road.

Caorunn Artist's Garden
St Andrew Sq
Facing off with the Edinburgh Gin pop-up in the gardens opposite, Caorunn have taken over the manicured front garden of the RBS branch by Multrees Walk. Inside you'll find food from Barnacles and Bones, as well as glasses of gin punch for £2.50. Lovely stuff.

Milk Money Drinks
Brew Lab West End, Queensferry St Ln
Bottled cocktails and craft beer are the order of the day at Milk Money's pop-up just off Queensferry Street. Tasty flavours, exciting combinations, and very little waiting around? We're convinced. (Thu-Sun only, 6pm-midnight)
