The Sensational Alex Salmond Gastric Band: Oliver Pissed

Review by Bernard O'Leary | 10 Aug 2012

If the idea of a musical adapted from Oliver! about the minimum pricing laws for alcohol sounds a bit ropey... well, yeah. You're right, it is.

Tommy Mackay is a familiar face on the local circuit, a loveable eccentric who crowbars puns into popular songs like a Scottish Weird Al Yankovic. Some are genius, most are unbearable, all of them are carried along by his manic energy.

Oliver Pissed sees him work his magic on the classic musical (giving us numbers such as Booze, Glorious Booze and an updated I'd Do Anything) while also giving an airing to numbers such as Chips, Cheese, Tramps and Es, based on a Cher song, and a version of Empire State Of Mind which pays homage to Leith Walk.

It's performed to a nearly-full house and the punters laugh, groan, sing along, groan, applaud but mostly groan. There's no getting around the fact that this is, on a critical level, a loaday shite. But it's an endearing loaday shite and the hour's not wasted. As daft as the whole thing is, Mackay will work harder than anyone on the Fringe to win you over and it would take a heart of stone not to respond.
