Ruby Thomas @ Just the Tonic at the Caves

Ruby Thomas' debut hour is based on a strong idea, but doesn't live up to its potential

On paper, this sounds like a fun character-based sketch show, directed by Mathew Horne (of Gavin & Stacey fame). On stage, not so much.

The premise of the show was a ‘Who do you think you are?’-style family-investigation of a misogynistic daytime TV host. We pass through time as Ruby Thomas plays female relatives of the host, from the 1800s to the present day. The performances are good, characters are decently established, and there should be a nod to Thomas’ co-star Chris Adlington, who perhaps gets the best of the good lines.

Despite this, there are very few jokes. The sketches (well, more character pieces) are well-devised, but poorly written. Laughs are scattered across a relatively empty, cavernous room. However, there's a genuine spark between Thomas and an audience member when he's begrudgingly pulled on stage to participate; perhaps more interaction would help?

There was also little resolve to Chick. After implied mentions of maternal problems, the end is an underwhelming reconciliation to an unfortunately underwhelming show.
