Phil Nichol @ Heroes, Monkey Barrel

Phil Nichol returns with a provocative show about acceptance and admitting when you’re wrong

Review by Polly Glynn | 14 Aug 2017

Stemming from an argument on social media, Nichol explains that Your Wrong is about tolerating those with different opinions, even when they think the Earth is flat and there’s aliens living on Jupiter. He reflects on decisions he’s made, thinking they were the right thing to do, only to then turn out he’s got the wrong end of the stick. Some of these admissions are jaw-droppingly awful and you can do nothing but feel immense sympathy for Nichol, while simultaneously thinking ‘you idiot!’.

Nichol’s delivery, veering towards the hyperactive, particularly lends itself to expressing the outrage of all the times he was wrong and the cycle of pain he often mentions. He also touches on his relationship with faith and the power of coincidence (or miracles, whichever end of the spectrum you fall on). The bulk of the show, an incident with his brother, is particularly infuriating when it comes to the power of ‘miracles’ in this morality tale. It’s a well constructed show which weaves in politics and religion seamlessly, while providing a much-needed tenderness to an intense hour.
