Madame Señorita @ Heroes, Dragonfly

Brilliant yet baffling, Madame Señorita certainly has us intrigued.

Review by James McColl | 19 Aug 2016

Physical, uncompromising and comedically malleable, Madame Señorita is a performer who truly commits to her show. The Expector is a strange and sometimes perplexing hour that seems to leave the audience in either shock or delight; from her creepy entrance to her rock n’roll exit, Señorita defies convention. She is a performer who is entertaining to watch even when her intentions are unclear, and her performance demands a similar level of commitment from the crowd as is demonstrated onstage. This can make or break the show, although most audiences will want to see it play out.

Her interactions are fragmented and broken up by dancing and singing; it is rare for Señorita to speak more than a handful of words, relying more on her actions and clowning credentials to form the show. As she morphs from one form to another, she slowly unravels her multitude of female personas like layers to be shed. Her true intentions are somewhat hard to pin down, as satire of female gender roles is just one of many things happening on stage. The clowning is exceptional, the effort faultless, it's just difficult to say what is being deconstructed (if at all) in this show.
