Heidi Regan @ Pleasance Courtyard

A Fin-tastic first hour from the So You Think You’re Funny and BBC New Comedy Award winner

Review by Polly Glynn | 09 Aug 2018

Heidi Regan loves three things: shark films, international trade deals and women. But how are these all linked, you cry? With some innovatively shoe-horned parallels and an aptitude at basic PowerPoint presentations.

Heidi vs Sharks is absolutely crammed with gags, from pointing out the mandatory shark film checklist (sexy important scientists who love sharks must learn to kill sharks in order to save humanity is #1) to slow-burning wordplay and screen-based fun. And although not all the jokes land, their frequency means you’re never far away from another cracker.

Her presence is understated and modest, making it an endearing look at her passions. However, her clear comic ability means she’s quietly self-assured and in complete control. It’s nice to see the award-winning performer explore her wider comedy range when audiences will only know her from small, well-honed club sets.

Ultimately, it’s silly, fun and mildly educational, and if Regan’s not already thought about doing a shark film club, she should, and it would sure to be a s(h)ellout.
