Doug Anthony Allstars @ Pleasance Courtyard

Another triumphant return for Fringe kings Doug Anthony Allstars

Review by Jennifer McKiernan | 10 Aug 2017

This is a special and unexpected show from musical comedy legends Doug Anthony Allstars. Tim Ferguson's multiple sclerosis forms the basis of a no-holds-barred study of the way society treats the disabled. It's close to the bone at times but this same refusal to flinch from the horror of the situation raises the impact of the comedy.

Shadow play at the start and finish is classic good fun and the allusions to Nosferatu and black magic carry on the gothic vibe. Paul Livingston pulls off a great Tales from the Crypt style intro before slapping out a full heavy metal narcissistic guitarist solo all over the stage. And Paul McDermott's vocals are as impressive as his tyranny.

The songs are darkly amusing, with a particularly angry one about refugees being a highlight. A whistle joke goes on too long, but seems to please the devoted fans. The minor bit of self-indulgence is excused by the poignant ending, which takes the show 20 minutes over time, much to the delight of the packed-out auditorium.
