Come Flyer With Me: David O'Doherty

Blog by David O'Doherty | 05 Aug 2011

I was never very good at flyering. I've always had a very idealistic view of people who came to my gigs, so I was always very reluctant to hand out flyer if people didn't look right, which is exactly the worst way to flyer. I'd stand around all day saying like "You look like the kind of person I want at my show, as do you… but you, no. You have the wrong sort of haircut.” Inevitably, that would be the person who came up to you and said “what have you got there?”. I would actually hide the flyer behind my back and say “…nothing”.

Luckily, I got out of the flying game in '05. I had just about enough money by then to pay people to do it for me. I still stay closely involved in the design of the flyers because if you hand these things over to PR people you end up with something covered in stars and filled with ludicrous quotes, proclaiming you to be the future of everything. The first person who thought of putting a quote on a flyer was probably a genius, but once everybody started doing it the idea should have been gracefully retired.
