Athena Kugblenu @ Underbelly Med Quad

Relevant and timely, Athena Kugblenu has both insight and talent.

Review by James McColl | 17 Aug 2017

Athena Kugblenu brings a fresh voice to the heavily discussed issues of the day. In her debut show, titled KMT (named after the expression kiss mi teeth), Kugblenu offers audiences something funny and original, dissecting the current British political landscape with a bit and vigour that is more inquisitive than most of her peers.

With routines about the 20,000 police officers removed from UK streets, cultural appropriation and gentrification, she questions these important talking points with a humour and style that makes for entertaining listening. She sometimes captures the room with only pops of laughter, and it can be a struggle at times as jokes sometimes tail off without definitive punchlines. But Kugblenu is calm and collected and never seems to sweat under the pressure, leaving KMT memorable for its bright material sprinkled throughout.

Athena Kugblenu: KMT, Underbelly Med Quad (Daisy), until 27 Aug (not 14), 5.50pm, £9-11
