Alexander Bennett @ Cowgatehead, PBH Free Fringe

Review by Polly Glynn | 19 Aug 2016

Looking like he’d stumbled out of a school shipwreck, Alexander Bennett’s tattered suit (biro scribblings included) clothes a comedian with plenty of potential.

The hour meanders through many comedy tropes: the physical, heightened entrance, wry observation, impressions, comedy song and dark delvings. There’s also mention of love. Love for red-headed women, and longing for one who’s repeatedly visited his gigs. Likewise, gender and sexual orientation: the androgynous cereal squirrel who taunts him at 2am and his own orientation realisation.

But at times, it’s too overbearing. There’s no real coherent structure and the comedy can often appear a little heavy-handed, for example his love song for transgender women. This isn’t to say Your Beloved is without merit though. His naughty impressions, witty one-liners and the dating ad for hostages are pretty inspired. He'll soon be playing to more than eight people.
