Entitled 'More Lasting than Bronze', this year's Edinburgh Art Festival Commissions programme takes on the role of the monument in society, "exploring what and how societies choose to publicly commemorate." Every Woman, the 'Dazzle Ship' designed by Turner Prize nominee Ciara Phillips, was the first commissioned piece to be announced; the artwork will be publicly revealed at Leith Docks on 29 May.

Elsewhere in the Commissions programme, there are new works by Graham Fagen – Scotland's selection for the 2015 Venice Biennale – and Roderick Buchanan, a new sound installation from Bani Abidi, and a Jonathan Owen sculpture set within the Burns Monument below Calton Hill. Olivia Webb presents a 'live monument' originally inspired by the 2011 earthquakes in her native New Zealand, and sculptor Sally Hackett presents a new take on the Fountain of Youth inspired by "the under representation of younger generations within Edinburgh's monuments."

EAF has also announced details of the artists participating in the second year of the festival's Platform strand for emerging artists. The exhibiting artists – The Brownlee Brothers, Paloma Proudfoot & Aniela Piasecka, Dorian Jose Braun and Jack Saunders – were selected by Ross Sinclair and 2017 Venice Biennale exhibitor Rachel Maclean.

The 2016 Edinburgh Art Festival runs from 28 July to 28 August at venues across Edinburgh.
