Maeve Higgins: Kitten Brides

Review by Jo Bedford | 12 Aug 2008

Since her appearance on Irish hit reality show Naked Camera—a sort of Trigger Happy TV affair—Maeve Higgins has become something of a celebrity in her  homeland. But the smiley comic hasn't let it go to her head.

Her relaxed demeanour immediately puts the audience at ease. With her gentle Irish lilt and wistful expression she chats amusingly of her quirks and quibbles. She loves looking into the windows of people’s houses, for example—“I still can’t find a non-creepy way of saying that”—and hates people who slip stories about their sexual antics into conversation. It’s all very amiable, but decidedly underwhelming.

Higgins is at her best when playing the kooky card. At one point she brings out pictures of her cat to demonstrate his lack of facial expression, and concludes the show brilliantly with a sketch about revenge.

Though undoubtedly charming, Higgins' show feels more like a getting-to-know-you session than anything else. You’ll probably like what you discover, but it won't have you in hysterics.
