Lauren Shearing and Sarah Pearce: Bad Advice

Review by Roxane Hudon | 08 Aug 2012

All the unreasonable buffoons in the world still moaning about the lack of good female comedians should probably shut up and check out these two funny ladies—it won’t event cost you anything to be proven wrong! Lauren Shearing and Sarah Pearce share all the bad, but well-intentioned, advice they’ve been given by friends and family members. The show is split into two with each of the comediennes performing their stand-up routines individually.

Shearing acts out bad dating advice from an alleged body language expert and also manages to squeeze in some jokes about feminism and politics. Pearce reads excerpts from an advice column inside a psychic magazine claiming to know people’s past lives and praises her singledom. They wrap up together by inviting the audience to write down their problems so they can solve them with some classic bad advice.

Neither being stand-up veterans, their delivery and performance could use some polishing: Shearing’s seems over-rehearsed, while the opposite could be said of Pearce, but it doesn’t take away from their charm. Both women are intelligent, refreshing and honest and prove that you don’t have to be louder or cruder than men to be funny.
