Colour Ham: The Colour Ham

Review by Roxane Hudon | 07 Aug 2012

On paper, a show promising a mix of magic, mind reading and “silliness” sounds like a really bad day at a really lame circus, but the trio of Kevin McMahon, Colin McLeod and Gavin Oattes surprise all cynics, this reviewer included, with a performance that is both original and funny.

The mood is set from the get-go, with comedian Oattes Morris dancing his way on stage, while magician McMahon seemingly pulls out a plush lion from a box which mentalist McLeod eventually steps out of. Audience participation plays a big part, with McMahon bringing a girl up to share a simili-date during which he does the usual to impress her, you know, pulling flowers from her hair and the like, and McLeod choosing one lucky man to be hypnotised on stage. Luckily, the two inject a lot of humour in their tricks and the show never takes itself too seriously.

If you’re not amused by magic and mentalism, then Oattes’ silly jests and the chemistry shared by the three performers will definitely keep you entertained. These guys had the audience in the palm of their magical hands—straight up belly laughs for the entire hour.
