To Be Continued... : Absolute Improv

Review by Bernard O'Leary | 06 Aug 2012

Local group TBC produce a series of familiar short improv games, kept fresh by some great uses of the audience. The show starts off with a "rap" battle, although the basic format of this will cause embarrassed giggles amongst anyone who's listened to hip hop after 1986. It works as a warmup though and gets us into the more engaging games, such as gameshow contestant who must guess his identity and occupation, and a version of chinese whispers acted out in mime.

C Nova is a great space for this kind of thing and the TBC guys use it to maximum effect, fully engaging every individual audience member. The best game is one where they attempt to re-enact the first date of a couple in the audience, using only a few basic details and some helpful yes/no noises from the couple themselves. It's not only very funny, but it really brings the audience into the show. Nothing here is revolutionary, but it's done with wit and energy and is consistently entertaining.
