The Collective @ Halt Bar, 23 March

Article by Julie Paterson | 30 Mar 2011

“The Collective” is a sketch show group of aspiring Scottish-based comedians. Sketche include everything from a leprechaun at a job centre to a ginger ninja, with some banjo playing in between, the humour being at its best when at its most surreal as the flyer handed out at the start neatly demonstrates.

The highlights of the show include Sarah Cassidy's lovelorn Tour of Govan, a brilliantly observed excursion around the ‘tourist attractions’ surrounding Ibrox – which would perhaps have been even funnier in a Glaswegian accent – and the ‘Prison Break’ sketch, referencing every break-out attempt worth its salt, featuring Will Setchell and Australian Geoff Gawler as felons akin to the Brad and Dan from the Fosters advert. The Duelling Banjos versus the Triangle also provided a comical musical showdown.

The sketches are all performed enthusiastically, with an abundance of energy and based around some inspired ideas. Perhaps if the writing is tightened up and focus given to the stronger sketches, “The Collective” can capitalise on what is well on its way to being a highly entertaining show.
