David Whitney: Struggling To Evolve

David Whitney wants to be a better man

So then, tell us about your show?
It is an hour of stand up comedy on many subjects, but the common theme is questioning why I have acted so primitively in different situations and how I can evolve into a better person.

How have your previews been going?
Very well thank you. There have been a variety of experiences from polite audiences, very tolerant to work in progress, to more traditional club audiences that have been far more demanding of the funny. Both have helped the show to evolve.

How are you going to keep it fresh for the full three weeks?
I rarely keep to the same running order, adapting to each and every audience and making every performance slightly different.

Is it ultimately worth coming to the Fringe?
Of course! I'm very excited to perform my debut hour. Nowhere else do you get the opportunity to do an hour of stand up every day for a month.

How are you feeling about your first solo run?
I'm straining at the leash to start the run. The previews have all been very positive with some excellent advice from Andre Vincent and Reginald D. Hunter.

Do you have a guaranteed, surefire flyering technique?
Not yet, but I'm hoping to acquire one!

What's your health regime for the Fringe?
Luckily I eat badly and drink excessively all year around so I shall take the Fringe festival in my stride.

What's the worst mistake people make at the Fringe?
Going to see comics just because they have seen them off the telly.

Last year's Fringe was all about the London riots. What major news event do you think will force you to hurriedly rewrite your 2012 show?
I've got a piece ready about David Beckham winning the 100m sprint at the Olympics, you know just in case...

Do you pay your taxes?
I look forward to making enough money for that for to be a concern.

What was your favourite joke when you were a kid?
Q: What's got two legs and bleeds?
A: Half a dog.

What do you think is the next step in human evolution?
For my answer to that you'll have to come and see the show.

Who else are you hoping to see while you're in Edinburgh?
I am very much looking forward to a Gaelic play called the Idiot at the Wall which will be at the Bedlam theatre. It's an ancient tale from the Outer Hebrides adapted into a new play for this year's Fringe.
