Tony Jameson: Football Manager Ruined My Life

Review by Simon Pattullo | 06 May 2013

Bright-eyed enthusiasm sees Tony Jameson through this wonderful hour. Ostensibly about his 20-year playing career with Football Manager, with this show we're taken on a ride with a man possessed. The grip of addiction, with its crashing lows and delirious highs, are all delivered with such charm it's terrific. He tells us the show is in its early stages, being refined for a run in Edinburgh, but it's well-honed already.

"Left back: Joe Mattock!" he shouts, and the crowd erupts. We're approaching half time and he's reading out his team sheet - of 'players who were great on computer but rubbish in real life'. It feels like a conversation, and it's a compliment to him that, despite my having never played the game (and knowing only 50% of the footballers mentioned) it's still very entertaining.

It's because we get more than just a riff on football, as he weaves tangents and ad libs to the main thread of his story; and it's very well played. Previously a lecturer, now forging a path with comedy, this show may have kicked off a fine career.
