BECkY FURY (+SUppORT)

Review by David King | 26 Aug 2012

It was a laid back affair, this one. I was surprised; I had felt sure that going to see a comedian named Becky Fury meant that I was in for some loud moments of rancour and vitriol. Fury had some support in tow though, and opener Tim Rankow who settled the whole room's nerves by being incredibly funny. His jokes are a little unnervingly on the darkside, but the unexpected nature of his punchlines buoys your relief and indeed your laughter.

Although Fury's brand of politically and socially aware anecdotal comedy is already very popular, I felt she lacked a bit of conviction. You will like Fury; she is affable. But affability and raging against the machine is a tricky balancing act. And so, unfortunately, the set appeared a little ramshackle and ill-prepared.

Lastly, James BL Hollands stepped up to read a story he'd collaged together from gay porn fiction. This sketch was perhaps delivered out of context but nevertheless a huge stream of very rude and imaginitive superlatives will often get the better of you.
