Nancy Clench: Down Right Dirty @ Spotlites, The Merchant's Hall

Review by Ben Venables | 22 Aug 2014

The low ceiling in the Merchant's Hall basement cannot cramp Nancy Clench's style. After all, Nancy doesn't need her heels to be Scotland's largest drag queen.

The audience tonight resembles a guest list compiled by Cynthia Payne, complete with MSPs on the front row. Nancy sets the tone by recounting the pros and cons of duct taping her ten inch penis before dressing. Endearingly, she talks about this as if it is something we all go through every day. Alas, no.

Though it isn't all down right dirty tonight. Nancy tells of her childhood in Fife, her time as a football referee and her current job in the Scottish Parliament. While Nancy's image is larger than life, her experiences and perspective in this portion of the show mark her as the kind of person it'd be nice to have a conversation with, as much as a raucous weekend.

While this is more low key than anticipated she is soon wading into the kind of material promised on the flyer. To a Utah businessman she says, "When you get back you can tell them what you learnt about Scotland. How we put our feet in each other." She also asks one audience member to go down on all fours to recreate an interrupted fisting.

There is a start-stop rhythm (though this is the first night of the show) and it's possible that a unifying theme such as her previous piece on the referendum would prevent it from falling between the two stools of the autobiographical and the outrageous – though this arguably makes for a more rounded experience. This is three-dimensional fun.
