Sarah Campbell: Isn’t it Funny???

Review by Jess Duxbury | 28 Aug 2013

Campbell’s show opens with an announcement of “Ladies and gentleman please welcome to the stage, teching her own show: Sarah Campbell!” As Campbell bounds to the stage and opens her set with a disclaimer of “I’m high on like 20 different anti-flu meds at the moment,” the audience are set up perfectly for the pleasant
slap-dashery of Campbell’s stand-up.

Sarah doesn’t enjoy the fun things in life. In fact she actively enjoys the things that other people don’t. A particular highlight of the set is her description of the joy she reaps executing the, in her words, ‘parade of triumph!’ (walk of shame for your average person). Her show is an enjoyable mix of self-deprecation and unashamed honesty which is refreshing at a festival based around the concept of people dressing up and playing pretend.

Campbell is a very genuine, amicable performer. Though her material falls short at times, there are rolling laughs throughout and you are left feeling a little bit more positive about the world. A very warm show, the perfect antidote to a stressful Fringe day!
