Benjamin Partridge: An Evening with Jeff Goldblum

Review by Simon Pattullo | 28 Aug 2013

The seats bank down to the cinema screen and Jeff Goldblum stands before us. A skinny, white, Welsh Jeff Goldlum. He tells us he’s not often recognised in public. Like all celebrities, he says, it’s different when you meet for real.

‘Jeff’ takes us through the defining moments of his life – early dalliance as a fly, some secret experiment Richard Attenborough cooked up – and explains to us the virtues and lessons from each. Some FAQs cover a few of our burning questions, and an on-screen cameo from Whoopi Goldberg (who bears an uncanny resemblance to the comedian Mike Wozniack) provide the secret ingredients of his career.

The limited and effective use of visuals goes some way to setting this performance apart, and the videos, photographs and screen grabs are perfectly judged. His faultless delivery coaxes laughs from the whole audience and his pure affability pulls us on board. Some moments of audience participation are maybe a little laboured but it’s forgiven since he’s this engaging.

He thanks us as we file out, shaking hands with some, offering souvenir badges to others; and it’s a real pleasure to find a Hollywood superstar appear so very normal. It's Jeffortless.
