James Christopher: What Are You Doing Here?

Review by Yasmin Ali | 28 Aug 2013

Billed as James Christopher: What Are You Doing Here? this show is, in fact, subtitled by a sandwich board outside the venue as 'James Christopher Explains Everything.' As it turns out, neither of these are that accurate, with the show being more of a mixed bag of one-liners and running jokes, observational comedy and personal anecdotes. Some of the material is philosophical, such as pondering consumerism, previous relationships and social media, but largely this show is so loose there is no real theme to discern. This is Christopher's fourth show on the PBH Free Fringe, and he's a decent comedian but it felt a bit long for such directionless material.

Like many comics, his humour is an acquired taste, but his material is largely inoffensive and playful. He is worth seeing for understanding the context of his 'Owl in Yer Face' catchphrase on badges for every audience member.

The writing was good but would have definitely benefitted from a tighter focus.
