Tommy Rowson: One Piece At a Time

Review by Yasmin Ali | 28 Aug 2013

Tommy Rowson mixes autobiographical material with observational comedy and fictional embellishments, all delivered with wry Welsh charm. A BBC New Comedy finalist from last year, as well as Chortle Award nominee and winner of So You Think You're Funny (2011), Rowson is an act to seek out at this year's Free Fringe.

His material focuses on personal relationships, true crime, finding God and his associated tattoos, all confidently told without cliché. The show is interspersed with short video clips - together with Rowson's director's cut explanations - that help relate the stories. Hip-flask to hand for comedic timing, he confidently narrates his anecdotes with panache and swagger. His Welsh lilt is easy on the ear, and offers a nuance to his delivery.

The material is refreshingly honest, and delivered with candour. Even his material on The Bible is relayed too charmingly for anyone to take any offence. Rowson is one of those comics who is genuinely funny: he is sweet, clever and with an abundance of street-smarts. His visual compilation of letters and photos is genuine and original. One to watch, this year and next.
