Patrick Morris: Standing Up and Saying Things

Review by Heather McDaid | 13 Aug 2013

It's not every day you find a comedian you see yourself in, and in this case it's the cynical 21 year old Patrick Morris. With his initial material leaning heavily on moronic things his friends do, there are knowing nods across the room. The notion of pre-drinking, the overuse of the term 'legend' and 'banter,' these are all too familiar to your average 20 something.

But beyond establishing a quick connection with many around his age, he delves into his strange thoughts on pornography, focusing on the oddly specific names and subsequent inaccuracies. It's almost lad-comedy in reverse. His awkwardness goes beyond everyday social situations, to sexting, where he rounds off probably the most middle-class, P.C. sext technique to date.

Morris is funny, but he often takes a little too long to move his story towards the punch. He trips from time to time, but gets himself back on track for his final tale: the classic go-to of their worst show to date. Luckily, his Fringe show fares better. Going down the tried and tested route of just talking about his young life, it's both an enjoyable and relatable half hour of comedy.
