Pretending Things Are A Cock

Review by Bernard O'Leary | 26 Aug 2012

Jon Bennett starts his show by telling us what to expect over the next hour. This is useful because what the hell do you expect from a show called Pretending Things Are A Cock? It turns that it's going to be a single puerile joke (photos of Bennett travelling the world and pretending things are his cock), illuminated by some superb storytelling.

Bennett has amassed a pretty impressive photo album and his pretend cocks range from random household objects to the Statue Of Liberty and Samuel L Jackson. All of these are linked by Bennett's yarns, roughly broken up into two passages: his memories of growing up with a dickish, oversexed older brother; and his adventures travelling the world in search of pretend cocks.

The show lacks a strong ending and we leave feeling slightly unsure about whether the cock shots were really worth all the hassle. That said, Bennett has done something impressive here and taken an incredibly childish idea and turned it into something that's funny and surprisingly moving. It all hinges on his storytelling and he has a near-mystical ability to spin a yarn, bringing characters and places to vivid life.
