Abigoliah Schamaun: Girl Going To Hell

Review by Bernard O'Leary | 23 Aug 2012

"Oh, I'm going to hell for this," is a pretty overused terms in our society, often said after committing some mundane sins. Congratulations then to Schamaun for creating a show that genuinely might see her condemned to a lake of fire for all eternity.

Schamaun looks for jokes in places where Frankie Boyle fears to tread. Her recent burglary is thorughouly mined for laughs as is the recent death of her father, prompting one of the most disturbed and most hilarious passages of any show at the Fringe. And then there's sex. Boy, there's a lot of sex. Schamaun's setlist must look like the menu on a porn website: interracial, anal, threesomes, and so on. There's an excellent anecdote about what Premiership footballers would refer to as a "spitroast" which prompts as many blushes as laughs. It all works because Schamaun is so confident and honest. Her razor-sharp all jokes are all based on how she really feels about her many misadventures and the absurd nature of human existence.

It's hard to believe that this is only her third Fringe. She's now such an integral part of the Laughing Horse lineup each year that it simply wouldn't be the Fringe without her. Definitely bound for hell but, please god, not just yet.
