Mark Restuccia: How to Succeed at Internet Dating

Review by Simon Pattullo | 22 Aug 2012

Mark Restuccia’s at his best when he chats to the crowd, hinting that he’ll win us over in this little basement venue.  Few initially admit to having used internet dating, yet nods and splurts of recognition escape as he discusses its foibles. “I told you I’d get you”, he says.

He is a charming performer, very affable, and not only this critic is willing the show to work when at times things get a little loose. Projecting screen grabs from the unbelievable - and unbelievably specific - number of dating sites out there adds an extra dimension, and his list of likes and dislikes does make a fine break from the monologue. However, there are a few too many references to missing slides, and at times he does appear a little rattled.

It is a fine idea and it is a good show, but it’s just not quite strong enough to pull off the otherwise impressive conclusion. Although he’s got the essential GSOH and did treat us impeccably throughout our time together, there just wasn’t that elusive spark.
