Robin Ince: Happiness Through Science

Review by Elaine Downs | 15 Aug 2012

Robin Ince, staunch supporter of the PBH Free Fringe, brings his Happiness through Science show to the Jam House. This show allows him to celebrate his love of science and his enthusiasm for life while taking a pop at homoeopathists, Melanie Phillips and other purveyors of nonsense. He is quick to point out he is not a scientist by training and sells himself as an interested idiot, telling the audience: “One of the adventures of being human is that we don’t know very much, so we can learn something new every day.” While this clever show has as many science references as an episode of The Big Bang Theory, you don’t have to be a geek to appreciate his humour.

With so much quality material to squeeze into an hour the show proceeds at a breakneck speed. Ince’s enthusiasm for the subject of science spills over into everything from a flirtatious Higgs Boson to why Mr Potato-head wouldn’t be attracted to Barbie. Ince shares his fascination with Feynman, the genius buffoon who inspires us all to be interested in the world around us and supports experimenting on jelly. Inspiring, intelligent and all for free, what’s not to love?
