Jo Caulfield: Thinking Bad Thoughts

Review by Barrie Morgan | 14 Aug 2012

Who doesn't like a bit of Jo Caulfield? Everyone likes Jo, she's quite universal in her craft. Her musings are succinct and insightful, often shining new light on the routines of modern life. She's pretty much got her whole demeanour and material down pat. This show is no different. Caulfield continues to draw in her audience, leading them on an enjoyable journey through her mind.

For me, the problem here though is the lack of ambition. Sure it's accomplished but it is all pretty vanilla and would benefit from being a bit edgier. Most of the audience aren't here for edgey, to be fair, so she sails through the hour like a true professional garnering praise and laughter at every turn. It's also clear Caulfield is in her element within the confines of The Stand. She's no stranger to the venue and her ever-apparent comfort in the cellar shines through. It's a pity that there are no real surprises in the set. She's clearly an excellent comedian; a pity then that she chose to follow the speed limit and play it safe tonight.
