The Magician's Daughter @ The Cowbarn-Underbelly

This is not Shakespeare, but two of his most charismatic characters, Caliban and Ariel in a new story with puppets and song for ages 3+ .

Written by Michael Rosen for the Little Angel Theatre in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company, this is a brilliant collaboration. As former Children's Laureate, Michael Rosen is famed for his humorous work for children. Don't expect Shakespeare's text but a newly imagined story, about Isabella, travelling to her grandmother Miranda's island where she meets a 'Bossy Boots' Ariel and endearing monkey-like Caliban who help her stop the pouring rain at home.

What better way to introduce two of Shakespeare's characters, whose knock-about humour and skill at audience participation had the children roaring, and a luminous moon and storm created moments of mystery and magic. Ariel has a pointy nose and blue hair standing on end as she wafts about in her airy world whilst monkey-like Caliban grubs about in the earth for truffles. The contrast between Ariel's delicacy and the geometric carving of Caliban are beautiful examples of Lyndie Wright of the Little Angel's renowned puppet making. These rod puppets are manipulated by actors visible on stage (Bunraku-style) by Clare Rebekah Pointing and Lizzie Wort, who also play Miranda and Isabella with verve, creating a great rapport with the children: a delightful show to celebrate the Little Angel's 50th Anniversary and a definite hit.
