Vadim/Underling, The Caves, Edinburgh, 29 April

Underground hip-hop at its most damn funky

Article by Melanie Jiggilo | 10 Jun 2007
The monolithic subterranean depths of the Caves are normally best suited to the lowest denominator-pleasing antics of funk and soul, rather than underground hip-hop, but then, underground hip-hop isn't always so damn funky or soulful. DJ Vadim is no stranger to a party and while his set seems sometimes ill-placed and awkward, once he's joined by vocalists Yarah Bravo and Katherine deBoer of Belleruche, it takes on a far more involved aspect.
Headliners and, against the odds, show-stealers; Underling have been whipping up a frenzy across the UK with their heady brew of leftfield scratching, sizzling keys, free jazz drums, bowed bass and meta-poignant tongue-twisting lyrics. Tonight the obviously nervous band quickly warm up until they are on fire, eventually joined on stage by Vadim, Yarah and deBoer in a sublime routine that bodes well for their forthcoming album.
