Tweek may need to twiddle their format, but there's potential for a solid night

Ryan Ellis kicked off the first night of Tweek with some wholesome tech-house, mixing in some hi-nrg tunes eliciting plenty of camp wiggling from the dancers. A spot-on warm up followed by Bruno F-K with inoffensive house. The bar area gave refuge to a number of dispossessed older clubbers and techno fans, presumably waiting to see if guest Brainstorm (Pure) would give them an opportunity to get their dance fix in a city currently denuded of serious techno nights. He opened promisingly enough with Green Velvet's La La Land, but his mash-up style didn't have enough continuity; he leaned heavily on older classics while the visuals behind him asked "Who's with me?", but clumsy mixing and pointless gaps made that difficult for longer than three minute stretches. Unfortunately the crowd wasn't big enough to justify the second floor opening, so all DJs were moved to the main at an earlier closing time of 4.15am. The event was slightly disjointed, perhaps due in part to trying to combine a few club formats. Tweek may need to twiddle their format, but there's potential for a solid night for Cabaret's Thursdays. [Wendy Martin and Mike Byrne]
