The Tiger Picks' playground electro style with its new wave leanings doesn't quite seem to fit with the overall Allstars tone

The Lo Fidelity Allstars were one of the flagship artists on Fat Boy Slim's Skint Records label but for various reasons never received the recognition they deserved. 2008 ushers in the ten-year mark for the Allstars, so they have packed up their eclectic mix of sounds and hit the road. Roys Iron DNA starts the night off, a tight five-piece showing signs of promise blasting out their atmospheric sync and guitar-driven brand of rocktonic. Think the Longcut but with a few more members. The Tiger Picks are the somewhat bizarre choice of main support: their playground electro style with its New Wave leanings doesn't quite seem to fit with the overall Allstars tone. The Allstars are restricted to an hour-long set, and as such the big songs from their studio albums dominate. They open with Tied to the Mast before playing The All The All, and by the time the third track On My Mind is blasted out the crowd are really enjoying themselves, grooving to the Allstar gumbo of rock, trip-hop, electronica, big beat and rumbling phat bass lines. Battle Flag explodes out of nowhere, with the gradual intro being chopped out, seemingly for the element of surprise, and Cattle Prod, Voodoo House and Come Alive are further highlights. They finish on their classic Disco Machine Gun, perfectly complimented by bongo percussion. Time restrictions means that there is no material from their ongoing side project Technically Men but you can't win them all. [Franck Martin]
