Album Review by James Blake | 10 Jul 2007
Album title: MANASYt
Artist: Tales of Ignorance
Label: MNX [album of the month contender]
Monox, many a Glaswegian's dirty techno dealer of choice, is once again dishing out the bad stuff. This time it's some recorded evil, from associated label MNX. MANASYt is cooking up the heavy electronic high for us this time, utilising some of the skills showcased at the Soundhaus for his recent PA set. He played on the same night as another master of the hallucinatory headache, Dave Tarrida, and you'd have been hard pressed to choose the heavier of the two. He was launching this Tales of Ignorance album when The Skinny was given the endorphins and the ear-bleed, and he certainly gave no quarter. You'll probably have heard his work played out before, but you may not know that his was also one of the better tracks on Dave Clarke's World Service 2. MANASYt is one of the fiercer, darker producers in the underground, and his album is testament to that. While MNX's output has been fairly limited, with only seven releases, you can depend on them for some unrelenting attitude on every one. Their recent tag-team gig with Numbers - the sweatfest that was DJ Funk at the Subclub - was just the latest in a long line of aural beatings from the Monox team. Tales of Ignorance is no less ruthless, and it's the soundtrack to a violent cyberpunk fantasy: If the press is to be believed, it contains the coded history of replicant agent MANASYt's infiltration of earth, codenamed Operation:Scumfilter. He is the Man With No Shadow, and his mission here on Earth - in the Land of the Fee and across the Urals, Eurasian Sector #60659 - is one of galactic importance. His record of the struggle may not just be good to spasmodically dance to, it could also very well be humanity's only warning. [James Blake]
Released: Out now on MNX as a limited run of 500, available from MNX or Rub-a-dub in Glasgow.
