Niobe - White Hats

Niobe's voice can be both disturbing and soothing

Album Review by Karen Taggart | 15 Jun 2006
Album title: White Hats
Artist: Niobe
Label: Tomlab
White Hats' is German native Niobe's (Yvonne Cornelius) most accessible album since her previous LPs 'Voodooluba' and 'Tse Tse'. Fans of her melancholic, abstract sound will love her latest offering, which hopes to entice new followers to her beautiful melodies. This album differs somewhat to her previous releases because the songs are decidedly more optimistic and peaceful. The eclectic album swiftly moves from ambient, chill-out softness to passionate, soulful loneliness, and back again, providing the perfect backdrop to the unique, alternating sound of Niobe's voice, which at times can be both disturbing and soothing. Standout tunes include the catchy Give All To Love, which has the potential to be a future single release, and the title track White Hats, which has been described as "an alpine country lullaby."
