With poignantly abstract titles such as 'Safari Jazz' and 'Apple of Disco', one is immediately intrigued to see what Polish DJ Max Skiba can offer. His tracks draw you in with intriguing hooks that don't sound quite like anything else. The quirky drum loops are undeniably danceable and really capture the imagination. Simplicity is the key to Skiba's appeal. He doesn't try too hard with build-ups or tone changes but relies instead on ambient sounds and beats that defy you to sit still. Perhaps Skiba epitomises Polish culture: harping back to darker European electro days (Kraftwork comes to mind) whilst embracing a positive sound for the future. During 'Violet Carnation' some of the synths evoke memories of Ross in 'Friends' abysmal keyboard performance; but at least it leaves you smiling! The title track proves Skiba does know his stuff, fusing irresistible grooves with his own synthesised orchestral delights. [Luc Benyon]

Released: Out now.
If you like it also try Fourtet and Kraftwork.
