Kid Koala - Your Mom's Favourite DJ

The hip-hop equivalent of having your tummy tickled.

Album Review by Bram Gieben | 13 Sep 2006
Album title: Your Mom's Favourite DJ
Artist: Kid Koala
Label: Ninja Tune
This time Kid Koala takes you on a narrative journey through his discovery of DJing and his love of vinyl. Fragments of intricate, scuffed scratching link together children's stories, dusty funk and gritty blues, and even a surprise appearance from a certain legendary newsreader, playing jazz flute. The all-too-brief snatches of his new band Slew hint at a grungy, old-school rock and roll sound. Koala's naturalistic, quirky style belies the complexity of his narrative arrangements. The home-made feel is his unique selling point: 'Your Mom's...' is like an old-school mixtape by your weird mate with the gigantic collection of obscure records. OK, so it isn't exactly your average party-banger, but on your headphones, or accompanying a session of some kind, you can't deny the appeal of a record that makes you nod your head, smile, and roll around laughing. The hip-hop equivalent of having your tummy tickled. [Bram Gieben]
Out September 25.
