O Meara's problem is deciding which side of the intelligent-dance dichotomy to pitch his soundsystem in.

Tonight we're going to party sagely, like it's 1994! Irish DJ and producer Diarmaid O Meara seems caught in a time when 'intelligent dance music' clashed with the rave-quashing Criminal Justice Bill. He may rightly have a grievance with the ramifications of such an act; his label Gobsmacked found itself on the receiving end of 'cease and desist' orders from local authorities, hence the album's title. Perhaps a more enduring problem for O Meara is deciding which side of the intelligent-dance dichotomy to pitch his soundsystem in. Opening track Melodical Revolution spasms with the glitchy metronomic beats of Autechre, albeit in a rather cut-n-paste Pro Tools fashion. Later though, the clumsy classical sampling and punctuating 'whoops' of Hangin' Around With The Wrong Crowd sounds more like Utah Saints than U-ziq. However, lead single, An Inconvenient Abomination's cyclical, Commodore-64-on-the-fritz, electro freak-out would see only the ultra-prudent denying themselves a glow-stick moment. [Darren Carle]
