Anat Ben-David - Virtual Leisure

Ben-David insists on scratching her nails down the metaphorical blackboard

As 90% of music television descends into a smutty mulch of thrusting packages, dance-hall booty-shaking and general chauvinist debauchery, it's only right that the roster of female artists revelling in their intimidating sexuality should continue to grow. Anat Ben-David does punk. Cynical anti-fashion at its most hip. In fact, it's a damn shame she didn't get her chance at this in 1970s CBGB-era New York. Unfortunately, by comparison to modern contemporaries like Le Tigre and Peaches, Virtual Leisure is 46 minutes of raunchy but rather forgettable electro-punk. Though it packs a number of catchy beats, Ben-David insists on scratching her nails down the metaphorical blackboard on a number of occassions, including the truly horrible refrain of "I would like to go to Russia." Conversely, the highlight is the acerbic Fuzzy Nipple, which manages to get the ratio of spit and sass just right. [Chris Cusack]
