Hector @ Sunday Circus, 25 July

On the verge of celebrating its third birthday, Sunday Circus is now very much a key player in Glasgow’s clubscene

Despite the day-to-night-time event being forced from its spiritual home of The Courtyard earlier this year, the future’s looking bright after a successful re-location to another city centre bar with an outside area, The Ark.

“Basically the premises was sold without consulting us at all,” explains resident DJ and promoter, Ronnie Muirhead, who actually helped take over its lease late last year. “Whoever has bought the place has other plans for it, so the situation’s been totally out with our control which has been really frustrating.”

However, after holding a packed out party at the larger capacity Ark at the end of May, it seems that this turn of events may not be the disaster it could have been, as Ronnie’s confirms.

“It was definitely one of our best Sunday Circus’ to date; Spencer Parker was our guest and played a brilliant set, he’s easily one of the most enthusiastic DJ’s I’ve met and definitely helped get the crowd going. It would have taken a lot to even match the atmosphere of The Courtyard but The Ark has the huge advantage of being a much bigger venue, which means people can chill out inside or up the back of the beer garden if they want to; overall it’s got a more relaxed, less intense feel to it which I really appreciated.”

Aside from DJing at their own events, in the past twelve months Ronnie and fellow Sunday Circus resident, Affi Koman have also played Rockness, Subculture and made several appearances at Pressure. “We've been given some great opportunities by Dave Clarke at Soma Records, warming up for some of our favourite DJs, such as Cassy and Simon Baker,” says Ronnie

After a year featuring the likes of Julieta, Ekkohaus, Guido Schneider, Anthea and Alex Celler, to mark their third birthday, they’ve booked the London-based Mexican DJ/producer, Hector to play. With residencies at the capital’s Dig Your Own Rave and Kubicle nights as well as regular slots at Fabric, Bar Americas, Regine and Watergate, he’s rapidly established himself on the international DJ circuit.

Initially inspired to take to the decks after witnessing the sets of several visiting European DJs to his hometown of Guadalajara; Hector later moved to England, determined to carve out music career for himself. Befriending Phonica Records’ boss, Simon Rigg while DJing in Ibiza, he gained a part-time job in the London record store on his return, subsequently becoming the first producer to release on its label offshoot last year.

Since then he’s notched up output on Mobilee and 8-Bit, his tracks getting played by the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Onur Ozer, Dinky and Appleblim, amongst others.

With the possibility of a London event later this year, a potential Ibizan Sub Club hook-up next summer and future guest DJs such as Craig Richards and Dinky already booked, looking beyond these celebrations, Sunday Circus seems certain to not only cement its position in Glasgow clubland but grow beyond it.
