Soma Night @ Cabaret Voltaire, 20 Aug

Article by Ed Lamb | 06 Aug 2010

Ah, Soma, a welcome hedonistic distraction in this brave new world. Glasgow’s independent electronica label has been around since 1991, home to the ever-successful DJ combo Slam and playing host to a multitude of high quality acts from across the spectrum of dance, funk and all realms in-between. These include, most notoriously, Daft Punk, as well as Alex Smoke, Black Dog and Octogen. Soma’s highlighting of the best in dance and electronica has become a perennial favourite at the Edge festival.

And it is indeed the aforementioned Slam, founders of Soma Records, who headline the evening’s festivities. Slam are producer/DJ duo Stuart MacMillan and Orde Meikle, and it’s fair to say the pair revolutionised the dance music scene in Scotland. Their monthly residence at the Arches (Pressure) is, after over a decade, still one of the hot tickets.

Another stalwart of the scene is Lars Sandberg, aka Funk D’Void who, over the past 15 years, has gained a serious reputation for moving the dancefloor. Noted for his technical finesse, Sandberg plays everything from deep house to straight-up techno.

Glasgow young gun Harvey McKay has raised a lot of heads since bursting on the scene with his track 69. He’s supported Richie Hawtin and Green Velvet, but don’t call it minimal, supra-minimal perhaps?

In Cabaret Voltaire’s other room, a proper, no-fuss house party from Edinburgh’s Telefunken residents Alan Gray and Nick Wilson. Gray has gone on record saying that the floor at a Telefunken is strictly for people ‘who want to get down’. Simple.
