Wee Dub Festival @ Various Venues, Edinburgh, 3-5 February

Preview by Neil Murchison | 30 Jan 2012

Dub takes over Edinburgh for a second year and, like any good sequel, everything just got a whole lot bigger – to the extent that the ‘Wee’ in the festival’s title is now merely for ironic effect. Expanding to three days, the festival will feature more than 15 artists across four of the city’s best venues with more than 20 hours of live music and DJs between them.

The headliner Mad Professor is recognised by many as being the man responsible for taking dub music into the digital era having recorded and produced hundreds of records of his own and others, including the legendary early work of Massive Attack. Zion Train seem mere babies by comparison having been at the forefront of the dub/dance scene for over 15 years with Neil Perch behind the decks as the heart of their sound.

Under the umbrella of dub a lot of unique musical territory is being covered from Celt Islam's fusions of ‘Sufi Dub’ and ‘Transnational Dubstep’ to Bristol seven piece group Dub Mafia’s live band/drum ‘n’ bass sound. Two Glasgow bands will also be in playing, reggae dancehall legends Mungo’s Hi-Fi and the eight piece ska collective Esperanza along with the Polish dubstep/reggae producer and DJ Radikal Guru.
