The Final Fling

As the Venue closes its doors for the last time on Calton Road (and perhaps, forever) they have lined up opportunities for you to say your tearful farewells several times over, if you haven't already done so, at May's extravaganzas.

For a generation known for their memory loss, it's quite remarkable that Pure has achieved such legendary status, but a look at the club's history makes it easy to understand why. Pure started in 1990 and provided weekly techno shenanigans from its home at the Venue for seven years until going fortnightly and eventually halting proceedings in their 10th year - returning only for their feted birthday bashes. Pure influenced a whole generation of clubbers and helped in part to create a scene which until recently has been thriving; with Edinburgh venues dropping like flies it's hard to say what the future holds. Pure are making sure the Venue goes out in style, with their Final Fling on the penultimate night of the Venue (June 9th).

Residents Twitch and Brainstorm will be commanding the twin gramophones of the middle floor all night, with Twitch promising "a few tears and a lot of madness", and Brainstorm gearing up for a fitting Venue send-off. Pure's past guests have gained legendary status in their own right and read like a who's who of techno: the final night is no exception as they welcome Speedy J playing live with his own brand of intricate abstract techno. He'll be joined by Phil Hartnoll (one half of Orbital) on the top floor and The Bill and Rob Dylan will be winding things up in the cooler. It would be an excellent idea to get yourselves along, because Brainstorm reckons that it is "very unlikely" that a Pure event will be happening again anytime soon. We asked what he thought will happen to Edinburgh's clubbing given the recent demise of venues. "I'd expect that the Calton will fill The Venue's shoes to a degree", he replied. "The nature of clubbing has changed considerably over the lifetime of The Venue and when Pure started Edinburgh was full of discos – to a certain extent this seems to be coming round again, although live music is the current flavour of the day. I'm sure that clubs will continue as long as there is a market for them, although I don't think that there is any other venue with the straightforward 'box with loud speakers at one end and bar at the other' functionality that generated a certain focus – shame."

Also playing this month is Tokyo Blu and Club Michigan with the Beatroot DJs on June 2nd. Tokyo Blu will be covering the main floor and the cooler which hosts the resident DJs (expect their twisted fusions of house, latin, disco and electrohouse) and the 8-piece Tokyo Blu live band playing original tracks. Live percussion by Pepe Santamaria is also featured. The main floor will have "Northern Ireland's finest" Niall McKervey with a sexy house mix, and Edinburgh's FutureB and three deck magician, Little Grooves. Michigan will be having their last date at The Venue on the same night in the loft for one last blast of house and techno of the Detroit kind. Don't panic, they will be back on a quarterly basis once a new home is found! And if you haven't techno techno techno'd yourself to death then React will be back on the 3rd with their raggy, baggy, and dirty tek-no.
