World on the Beat, October 08

Now the first real chill winds are flickering in, it's imperative that you do things that keep your personal central heating system running.

First of all, you’ll need to make your heart beat – so go and listen to the bold and beautiful songs of Amanda Palmer, the otherworldly accordion of Jason Webley, and the sumptuous strings of Zoe Keating (Thu 2 Oct, 8.30pm, King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, £12).

Now your blood is pulsing, time to get moving. Your knees and temperature will rise as you skank to old-skool ska-kings The Beat (Thu 2 Oct, The Ferry, Glasgow, £13.50, and Fri 10 Oct, The Doghouse, Dundee, £TBC), and you'll be warmed by subtropical winds emanating from the warm horns of the Black Seeds' Aotearoan reggae-dub (Mon 27 Oct, 7pm, Liquid Rooms, Edinburgh, £14).

The weather brews as Gilles Peterson, the Global DJ of Radio 1, spins up a worldy whirlwind (Fri 17 Oct, The Sub Club, Glasgow), but the full force of the tornado will be in the form of the first Balkanarama! after the summer, featuring Balkan Berliner DJ Kasparov and the ever-bright, ever-burning Orkestra Del Sol (Fri 24 Oct, Studio 24, Edinburgh, £6 before 11pm/£8 after).

However, if you feel like hiding from the storm and boogying to some bangra in your bedroom, then get yourself Glasgow-based Tigerstyle’s rocking new single Balle! Shava! (http://h1.fortifymedia.net/nachural, 99p). Dholicious!
