The new venue for Edinburgh's Institute for Electronic Artists will be The Left Bank, for their mid-week networking event, and on Sundays The Institute Live; an opportunity for a few acts to play live electronic music. Each night will occur once a month, and is being kicked off with The Institute Live debut night featuring Ives, Operator, Dee Mond and Junior Lazarou. Junior Lazarou a.k.a DJ Mitchell became addicted to underground dance music in 1989 when he stumbled into an after-hours rave at Glastonbury. He began spinning vinyl on a regular basis at clubs, raves and outdoor parties. Later a friend introduced him to the pleasures of hardware, namely the infamous Roland 303 and 808. Junior Lazarou's current sound draws together influences from the last three decades: sampling punk, reggae, ska, disco, hip-hop and electro, and fusing them with techno, electrotek, tekfunk, tech-house, tech-punk and acid - resulting in a twisted and jackin' funked up vibe at events such as Pillbox, React and Palgowan. His first release, entitled Ride It is out now on Intonation recordings. Dee Mond prefers to work with Final Scratch and use it as a platform for "battle style" electronica, electro, breaks and techno; mixed, scratched and juggled using special battle records made exclusively for Pyrate. He has guested for a number of clubs including Dogma, React and Split. Ives are Iain Foxwell and Brain Leslie, and have recently completed their second release entitled Who Wants a Soul When You Got Image and are at present gigging to promote their new album: reactions have been re-assuringly positive. Operator has performed alongside Jamie Liddel, Mylo and Hextstatic, and has a 12" coming out on Glasgow's Mighty Robot Recordings. Get along to sample some of the delights.
