Substance mark 9th birthday with Mono Junk party

A rare live show from veteran Finnish producer Kim Rapatti – aka Mono Junk – heads the birthday celebrations for Edinburgh techno night Substance this Friday. We look ahead, and Substance's Adam Richardson talks us through five choice Rapatti cuts

Launched at Henry’s Cellar Bar in the capital in 2006, the night has brought a host of big names to Edinburgh and Glasgow since its inception, with notable guests including Moderat, Nathan Fake and Detroit techno pioneer Jeff Mills.

2015 has seen Substance DJ at the Bloc Weekend festival at Minehead as well as bringing Dystopian label boss Rødhåd to Edinburgh for the first time, with plans for the year ahead including a revival of the night’s fledgling vinyl imprint TSAR. Substance will also be on the decks at The Skinny's 10th Birthday party at The Mash House on 16 October, with the night's resident DJs taking over one floor of the venue and a guest slot from Glasgow duo Hi & Saberhägen – details and RSVP here.

Talking to The Skinny to mark their fifth birthday back in 2011, Substance’s Adam Richardson described the night as “a place to escape the shit of the week, where you can get a proper dance, with sound people, to the best electronic music we can find... the music that gets played is pretty varied. A friend recently pointed out that you never know what you’re going to get and that’s why she keeps coming back."

Mono Junk, who will be making his first appearance in the capital in almost two decades, will be joined on the night by Substance residents Gavin Richardson, Dommm and Velocity Funk. To get you up to speed with Rapatti's extensive back catalogure, Adam has picked out five of Rapatti's key tracks from over the years.

Mono Junk – Another Acid [Trope 004, 1993]

"Top drawer acid techno from '93 on Thomas P Heckmann's Trope Recordings. See also Fu-Dimension (as Detroit Diesel) on DUM, and 2014's Jupiter Acid and Electric Chair on Skudge White."

Mono Junk – A1 [Trope 014, 1995]

"Channel B is the track which gets all the credit (it's 'one of the most sought-after dub/dancefloor tunes ever' according to Boomkat) but my favourite on the EP is A.... Very nice. Check out also Mind Wander (DUM 017) and Meteor (i220) from this era."

Coopers (Kim Rapatti & Jukka Kaartinen) – Untitled EP (1994) & Maximal Fun EP (2015) [DUM]

"Mini would possibly be my pick from the 94 EP – a slo' mo workout somewhere between Daniel Bell and Frak - but its not on the interweb (go find it!). The whole EP is pretty amazing. After 21 years they have just released the follow up Maximal Fun EP (also on DUM) which is on a par (see the title track and Indian Acid)."

Mono Junk – With You [Forbidden Planet 004, 2014]

"Icy, retro, euro-feeling electronic music. Again, great EP all round. See also 2015's follow up EP on Forbidden Planet (featuring the awesome synth hugeness of Suomen Moroderit Theme) and 1994's Monotone Fantastique by Rapatti as Melody Boy 2000."

Kim Rapatti – Mood EP [Plug Research, 1996]

"Rapatti on a more dreamy, spaced-out tip. Reflective of the fact I'm digging out tracks here at 6am(!) The Detroit-inspired Misuse Injury (DUM, 1993) should also be checked out, with its similarly ethereal melody."

Substance 9th Birthday with Mono Junk, Gavin Richardson, Dommm and Velocity Funk is at Bongo Club, Cowgate on Fri 2 Oct, 11pm-3am.
