The almighty We Are... Electric never fails to dig up the best nuggets of cutting edge electro, and this June is no exception. The recent stream of special guests - Le Castle Vania, Hot Chip and now Spektrum of Laahndahn Tahn - seems to be flowing into the indie end of the electro field of late, but it would be a travesty to lump genre-benders Spektrum into any such pigeonhole. Their style is sex, humour, punk and funk receiving sporadic jolts of pure electronic dancehall bliss, and bound with offbeat bass hooks phat enough to hang a parka. Lola Olafisoye's cyber-sex vocals and the band's tantalising melodies render them perfect remix material, as proven by the likes of Tiefschwartz, whose grinding mix of the chart stomping Kinda New habitually sneaks its way into electro DJ sets here, there and everywhere. Since carving their niche with Enter the Spektrum on German label Playhouse, they've developed an even more expansive sound, and a penchant for merging their sex appeal with bestiality - the new album, Fun at the Gymmkhana Club(Nonstop Recordings), boasts the title Horny Pony, with breathy, panting vocals and the odd whinny or two for good measure. Horsey type or no, don't miss the chance to see this explosive four piece rip it up at the Cab this month. [Rosie Mclean]
