Nation, the Liverpool club which spawned the global clubbing institution Cream, will close its doors at the end of the year, as plans for the development of its Wolstenholme Square home have been unveiled.

The development of Wolstenholme Square, which will also see The Kazimier close at the end of 2015, will see a range of new mixed-use buildings go up which will be up to ten storeys tall. There are also plans for a new multi-room venue on the current site of Nation.

A spokesperson for Cream said of the plans: “[Wolstenholme Square developers] The Elliot Group have taken on board the importance of retaining the cultural and musical hub that Wolstenholme Square offers and our ideas and ethos for the new venue.

“Ourselves and the thousands of people who have passed through Nation’s doors hold a deep attachment to the venue and what it stands for and the plans present us with an incredible opportunity to create an exciting new music venue for the city.”

The announcement of the Kazimier’s closure earlier this year was met with a mixture of anger and resignation by the Liverpool scene, with concerns raised over the lack of other suitable venues in the city centre and the cost of developing any future replacement for the multi-arts space.
