Messenger Sound System, The Bongo Club, Edinburgh, 7 Jul

If you are looking for a chilled yet vibrant night then this is your best bet

What can really be said about Messenger? It has run since 1987, and every self-respecting reggae, dub and ska fan should know what is on offer at the Bongo. With their ever growing ambition to turn the music 'up to 11', the sound is enjoyably deafening, with bass that runs through your body providing a lovely tingly effect. Often with top notch guests, this month the resident DJs are going it alone, out to prove their committal to their Jamaican inspirations, through their choice of roots and conscious dub reggae tracks. These nights have been going for what seems like forever and they deliver every time, keeping the crowd happy and the regular attendees coming back to the sweaty darkness of the Bongo. If you are looking for a chilled yet vibrant night then this is your best bet. [Lara Moloney]
